Networking & security in the Docker and Kubernetes assessment

Networking & security is one of the areas a Provyn Docker and Kubernetes credential scores separately, so a recruiter can see it on its own rather than averaged into one number. This guide explains what it covers, how it is tested and what to practice.

What it covers

Service discovery and networking between containers and pods, secrets handling and hardening containers.

Topics in the practice set for this area

  • K8s networking
  • networking
  • K8s secrets
  • Dockerfile / security

How it is tested

In the timed assessment, questions in this area use these formats: matching, multiple choice, short answer, written scenario. Each attempt draws its own set of questions, and this area gets its own sub-score on the credential when the attempt includes enough questions from it. The assessment questions themselves are never published; the practice set below is written separately for study.

What to practice

  • Expose a pod with ClusterIP, NodePort and an Ingress and explain who can reach each.
  • Store a credential in a Secret and mount it without baking it into the image.
  • Run a container as a non-root user with a read-only filesystem.

Try a practice question

From the free practice set (5 questions in this area). Answers and explanations are in the practice set.

  • A Service of type ClusterIP is reachable:
  • Which Secret field lets you write values as plain text and have the API server base64-encode them for you?
  • Network namespaces give a container:

Practice before the real thing

Both are free and use practice questions only, never questions from the real assessment.
