Statistics & interpretation in the Data Analyst assessment
Statistics & interpretation is one of the areas a Provyn Data Analyst credential scores separately, so a recruiter can see it on its own rather than averaged into one number. This guide explains what it covers, how it is tested and what to practice.
What it covers
Experiments, basic statistics and interpreting results honestly, including sources of bias.
Topics in the practice set for this area
- experimentation
- statistics
- interpreting results
- bias
How it is tested
In the timed assessment, questions in this area use these formats: code you write, matching, multiple choice, short answer. Each attempt draws its own set of questions, and this area gets its own sub-score on the credential when the attempt includes enough questions from it. The assessment questions themselves are never published; the practice set below is written separately for study.
What to practice
- Explain a p-value and a confidence interval in plain language.
- List what could make an A/B test result misleading before trusting it.
- Describe Simpson's paradox with a small example.
Try a practice question
From the free practice set (8 questions in this area). Answers and explanations are in the practice set.
- An A/B test reports p = 0.02 for the difference in conversion. Which statement is correct?
- A PM checks an experiment's dashboard every morning and plans to stop the test the first day it shows p < 0.05. What is the problem?
- An experiment was configured as a 50/50 split, but control received 52,300 users and treatment 47,700. What should you do before reading any results?
Practice before the real thing
Both are free and use practice questions only, never questions from the real assessment.
