Aggregation & analysis in the Data Analyst assessment
Aggregation & analysis is one of the areas a Provyn Data Analyst credential scores separately, so a recruiter can see it on its own rather than averaged into one number. This guide explains what it covers, how it is tested and what to practice.
What it covers
Turning data into metrics: aggregation, defining product metrics and choosing a clear visualization.
Topics in the practice set for this area
- aggregation
- product metrics
- visualization
How it is tested
In the timed assessment, questions in this area use these formats: code you write, multiple choice, put the steps in order, short answer. Each attempt draws its own set of questions, and this area gets its own sub-score on the credential when the attempt includes enough questions from it. The assessment questions themselves are never published; the practice set below is written separately for study.
What to practice
- Define a retention metric precisely enough that two people would compute the same number.
- Compute a metric at two levels of aggregation and explain why the answers differ.
- Pick a chart type for five example questions and justify each.
Try a practice question
From the free practice set (7 questions in this area). Answers and explanations are in the practice set.
- `support_tickets` has 500 rows. 120 of them have a NULL `resolved_at`. What does `SELECT COUNT(resolved_at) FROM support_tickets` return?
- You want every store whose total 2025 sales exceeded $1M. Where does the condition `SUM(amount) > 1000000` belong?
- A bar chart compares two teams' satisfaction scores, 82 and 86, with the y-axis starting at 80. Viewers conclude Team B is three times as satisfied. What is the best fix?
Practice before the real thing
Both are free and use practice questions only, never questions from the real assessment.
